My most recent assignment in my Narrative Filmmaking course was to create a short grounded in a "dreamlike world". After studying the works of Maya Deren and David Lynch, we were tasked with creating a surrealist piece without any dialogue––the surrealism of the dream-like world had to be portrayed through shot composition, mise-en-scene, and the editing of both the picture and ambient sound. Femme Reviere was directed, shot, and edited completely by me––this was my first solo project of the semester, which, while somewhat overwhelming, was an amazing learning experience. I decided I wanted my piece to focus on the hyper-reality of dream worlds, specifically in the context of femininity. So, I had my lead actor perform stereotypically feminine tasks to the ultimate extreme. Throughout the short we see her smash lipstick into her teeth, dress in an eclectic combination of feminine clothing, care for a "child", and grocery shop. All of this is paired with a rather jarring sequence of sound, which in turn creates an eerie, disturbing feel for Femme Reviere.
I had so much fun working on this short, and was especially appreciative of my actor's dedication to her role. One of my proudest pieces to date, I hope you enjoy Femme Reviere!
